Many of us read books not so much for the language used in the story but for the story that is actually told. If you ever read a book that had a funny saying in it or maybe repeated words several times, that book contains word play. Word play is used in many different works such as songs, storys, and poems. EH Harburg wrote the songs in the Wizard of Oz like "We're off the see the Wizard" and "Ding, Dong the Witch is Dead." These songs use word play extensively. The artist Mika used word play in one of his songs called "Love Today." Dr. Seuss one of the most noted children authors constantly used word play in most of his books. Books like The Foot Book , Green Eggs and Ham, Oh, the Places You'll Go, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas all contain word play. These are only a few authors who use word play in their works. Authors use word play in their works because it makes the writing more interesting, and draws your attention to critical pieces of their writing.

Authors use word play to make the writing more interseting because it adds humor and rhythm to the story. Word Play plays on the words and makes the work more interseting to the reader. The rhythm helps to create the tone in a story, song or poem. Word Play like repitition helps you remember words and is more appealing to the listener or reader. For example the singer Mika's song "Love Today" used repitition to make the song more interseting and memorable. Another type of Word Play that makes the song more interseting is Alliteration. This type of word plays add humor and nonsense to your works. In Alice and Wonderland for example alliteration is used in a fun nonsenical way. Also, in The Wizard of Oz, alliteration is used to make the song about going to see the Wizard more fun and enjoyable. Personification makes works very interseting and enjoyable. An example in Alice and Wonderland where they use personification is when they talk about "Time" as a person. This makes the story fun and interseting because time isnt a real person. Also assonance is a good way to make works more interseting. An example is in The Wizard of Oz when assonance is used in the song "Ding, Dong the Witch is Dead." Having assonance in this song makes the song very enjoyable and interseting to all viewers and listeners. All of these types of word play and more help the work to be interesting and enjoyable to the reader.

Authors also use word play to draw your attention to a piece of writing. When you are reading a story and come across word play, you are able to pick up on it and often think twice about what you are reading. Having word play forces your brain to pay more attention to certain critical areas of the book because they often don't make sense immediately. This is used quite a bit in Alice and Wonderland, for example, syntax, when used allows your brain to become more focused on that area, because it often is very nonsensical. Your attention is drawn to that part of the story because it says the same thing just in a varitey of ways. Another type of word play that makes your brain focus on a critical piece if repitition. Repitition used in Alice in Wonderland. Many other authors, like Dr. Seuss, use repitition. This draws your mind the words and allows you to remember them because they are repeated so often. Repitition is a fun way to allow your brain to focus on certain pieces. A pun is anothe literary device that focuses your attenion when reading. For example, Alice uses puns to make the reader pick up on words that mean the same but sound different. This focuses you on the nonsense in the book, song or poem and allows you to think about what is being told.

These are just a few ways word play is used. Word Play is used in many different works and is interpreted in different ways. Also different types of word plays have different effects on people. Different authors use word playin many contexts to add depth to their works. I only mentioned few but there are eight different types of word play that are used in different forms. Authors use word play to make their writing more interseting and the draw your attention to critical pieces of their writing.
